Crauford

I started playing the violin at the age of 6 and by the age of 8 had performed for BBC Scotland. I studied violin for a period with Warren Jacobs at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. During my teenage years, I played bass with the band One Night Stand with whom I toured the UK. In high demand as a session musician I worked at Fairview Studios, BBC Radio Leeds, Brighton Conference Centre and on the London function/corporate circuit. After moving to Cyprus I formed the band Late 48 in 1997.  Whilst playing with Late 48, I supported ‘Hot Chocolate’ on their Cypriot tour.

In 1999, I came back from the sun to the UK and worked the London circuit performing in a variety of ensembles ranging from solo performances playing Celtic music for dancing and entertainment to performing in function bands.  In 2002, I formed and became a director of the Syncopated Sound Co Ltd, a music production and performance company and developed the bands N-Compass and Synergy which have performed throughout Europe and the UK.  With the development of 54 North, I am   enjoying a return to writing and performing music based on Scottish Folk but adding elements of other musical styles to give a fresh and original feel to the music of 54 North.

My musical influences are: classical music from 1750 to 2000 with some knowledge prior to 1750 of Baroque, Folk music in particular Scottish fiddle music, blues, popular music and modern dance music. My current compositional philosophy is to write music using classical form to give a frame work but using Folk and modal music combined with modern influences to create something interesting. I am currently working on a set of Scottish violin duets having completed a string Quartet, a violin and wind synthesiser (AKAI Electronic Wind Instrument) duet and some violin and piano and piano and voice duets.

The second strand to my compositional bow is to write from a popular music slant using varied instrumentation including sequencing, brass, guitar, bass strings percussion keyboards and wind Synthesiser, I also include some elements of improvisation and musician tonal development within the music I write therefore combining written scores with oral instruction and development. I have had some success with composition for Theatre by having a couple of works toured by professional theatre.
